AISI 431 (UNS S43100 / DIN 1.4057) is a high-chromium, nickel-bearing martensitic stainless steel engineered for high tensile strength, excellent toughness, and good corrosion resistance. Its 15–17% chromium content and 1.25–2.50% nickel addition provide superior corrosion resistance compared to other martensitic grades such as 410 and 420 — making it suitable for components exposed to marine atmospheres and mildly corrosive media.
In its hardened and tempered condition, 431 achieves tensile strengths upwards of 1000 MPa, combining wear resistance with mechanical integrity. The grade is magnetic in all conditions and offers fair machinability in the annealed state. Weldability requires pre- and post-weld heat treatment to prevent cracking.
Its combination of strength, hardness, and corrosion resistance makes 431 a primary choice for shafts, pump components, marine fasteners, and aerospace structural parts.
